3 de junio 2010 - Visit to Guanajuato public schools

Buenos dias! After a small breakfast we headed down "EL hill" to meet up with the other participants to visit Guanajuato schools. We started at Escuela Primeria "Moises Saenz" which is about 15 minutes from Casa Caballeros. The school is beautifully nestled on the side of a hill and educates 400 students.

The next school that we vistited was Escuela Pimeria "Luis Gonzales Obregon". There we observed some more classes. One in particular was transitioning to an English class. We had an opportunity to see the children learn about greetings through song. We then ventured back down and to our surprise all of the school had congregated in the courtyard and were preparing to see a student production. We were treated to the play which, to the best of my understanding, was a story about a man wanting to provide for his family.

After LGO we took a ride out to Marfil outside of Guanajuato to another school called Cam. Cam is a special education center serving the needs of ages across the spectrum. There we met a young girl who is deaf and was very excited to show us the picture that she was working on. I had a chance to interact with her. I showed her the pictures that I took of her and her class and she couldn't get enough. It is very sad, she has the chance to listen and speak, but without hearing aids it will be difficult. The family unfortunately is unable to afford them for her, it is not clear as to if the school will help with that cost.

We returned to Guanajuato on the public transportation which afforded an opportunity to know how to get around the city. Interesting enough it costs 5 pesos (40 cents) to ride the public bus, but only about 30 pesos ($2.40) to get a cab. If you share the cab then it actually gets you there much faster for only a little more money.

Later that evening, me and some of the other participants gathered at the steps of Teatro Juarez at a place called "el Bar" and enjoyed the night life. We saw a Catholic procession pass by us, were serenaded by a traveling Mexican band, and just got to enjoy a fun night on the town with some friends.
